Google Nest

Nest Labs was founded in 2010 by former Apple engineers and rose to prominence with its learning thermostat, before Google acquired it in 2014 for roughly $3.2 billion. Nest devices — smart thermostats, video doorbells, indoor/outdoor cameras and smoke/CO alarms — were initially run as a semi-independent unit before being fully absorbed into Google’s hardware division and rebranded under the wider “Google Home” umbrella alongside Google’s own speakers and displays. Nest’s flagship learning thermostat, which adapts to a household’s schedule and preferences to reduce energy use, remains one of the best-known consumer IoT products globally and helped popularise the idea of AI-assisted home energy management. Google has since pushed Nest hardware toward deeper integration with Google Assistant, Google’s broader AI initiatives, and the Matter smart-home interoperability standard, positioning Nest/Google Home as a direct competitor to Amazon’s Echo/Ring ecosystem and Samsung’s SmartThings. Google’s ownership of both the hardware (Nest devices) and the dominant mobile operating system (Android) gives it a distribution advantage many rivals lack. For IoT coverage, Google Nest is a useful anchor for stories on smart-home energy efficiency, voice-assistant ecosystem competition, and the industry-wide shift toward standards-based interoperability via Matter and Thread.
