AWS IoT

Amazon's suite of managed cloud services for connecting, managing and analysing data from billions of IoT devices, from AWS IoT Core to AWS IoT Greengrass edge computing.

AWS IoT is the Internet of Things arm of Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing division of Amazon.com. Launched in 2015, AWS IoT Core lets manufacturers and enterprises securely connect, monitor and manage fleets of devices at scale, from industrial sensors to consumer appliances, using protocols such as MQTT and HTTP. The broader AWS IoT portfolio spans AWS IoT Greengrass for edge computing and offline operation, AWS IoT Analytics and AWS IoT SiteWise for industrial data modelling, and AWS IoT Device Defender for fleet security. Because it sits inside the wider AWS ecosystem, IoT data can flow directly into services such as S3, Lambda, SageMaker and QuickSight, making AWS IoT a common choice for organisations already standardised on AWS for compute and storage. It competes chiefly with Microsoft Azure IoT and a growing field of independent IIoT platforms such as Cumulocity. Typical use cases include predictive maintenance, smart building management, connected vehicles and large-scale industrial telemetry. As part of Amazon, AWS benefits from enormous global infrastructure — dozens of regions and availability zones — which appeals to enterprises with strict data-residency or latency requirements. Pricing is consumption-based, which can suit both small pilots and million-device deployments, though costs need careful management at scale. For an India-focused IoT audience, AWS IoT is relevant both as a platform choice for local manufacturers and system integrators, and as a benchmark against which regional and open-source alternatives are regularly compared.
