GE Digital was established in 2015 as General Electric’s dedicated digital-industrial subsidiary, built around the Predix platform for industrial IoT and asset performance management — an early and ambitious bet that GE, historically a maker of jet engines, turbines and locomotives, could also become a leading industrial software company. Following GE’s landmark 2024 breakup into three independent public companies (GE Aerospace, GE HealthCare and GE Vernova), GE Digital now operates as the Electrification Software business within GE Vernova, the energy-focused entity spun out of GE’s former Power and Renewable Energy divisions. Its Proficy software suite provides manufacturing execution, historian and asset-performance-management tools used widely in power generation, utilities and heavy manufacturing, while its digital-twin technology (including the SmartSignal predictive-analytics tool) helps energy customers anticipate equipment failures before they occur. GE Digital’s history is itself a notable case study in the broader industrial IoT market: after early, heavily marketed ambitions for Predix to become a dominant industrial cloud platform, GE scaled back the standalone platform business and refocused around targeted software products tied to its core energy and grid businesses. With GE Vernova reporting strong growth linked to global grid modernisation and AI-driven data-centre power demand, its software arm’s IoT and asset-management tools remain relevant to India’s power-sector modernisation efforts.
