Samsung SmartThings

SmartThings began as an independent smart-home startup founded in 2012, best known for its Kickstarter-funded home automation hub, before being acquired by Samsung Electronics in 2014. It has since become Samsung’s central smart-home platform, integrated into Samsung televisions, refrigerators, washing machines and Galaxy smartphones, as well as supporting a wide range of third-party sensors, locks, lighting and appliances from other manufacturers. SmartThings supports multiple wireless standards, including Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave and, increasingly, the cross-industry Matter standard, which aims to let smart-home devices from different manufacturers work together regardless of ecosystem. Samsung has used its scale in consumer electronics — TVs, appliances and mobile devices — to make SmartThings a default hub for households already invested in Samsung hardware, competing directly with Google’s Nest/Home ecosystem and Amazon’s Alexa-based smart home. Beyond individual devices, Samsung has also pushed SmartThings into energy management (linking to solar and EV charging) and matter-based interoperability initiatives with rival ecosystems. For an IoT audience, SmartThings is a relevant case study in ecosystem lock-in versus interoperability — a tension increasingly resolved (in principle) by the Matter standard that Samsung, Google and Amazon have all now adopted.
