Zebra Technologies

Zebra Technologies is a US hardware company specialising in enterprise asset-intelligence devices: barcode and RFID scanners, rugged handheld and vehicle-mounted mobile computers, industrial label printers, and machine-vision cameras. While less visible to consumers than cloud IoT platforms, Zebra’s devices are the physical infrastructure behind much of retail, warehousing and logistics IoT worldwide — the handheld scanners used by warehouse staff, the RFID readers tracking inventory through a supply chain, and the vehicle-mounted computers used by delivery and field-service teams. Zebra significantly expanded its IoT software capability with its 2019 acquisition of Fetch Robotics’ rivals and, more notably, its earlier purchase of Motorola Solutions’ enterprise business in 2014, which brought a large installed base of rugged mobile computing hardware. The company increasingly frames itself around “enterprise asset intelligence” — combining sensing, computer vision and data capture at the edge with analytics to give retailers and logistics operators real-time visibility into inventory, assets and workflows. In an IoT context, Zebra is a good example of a hardware-first company whose devices generate large volumes of the raw operational data that cloud IoT platforms and analytics tools subsequently process, making it a natural companion story to warehouse-automation and supply-chain visibility coverage.
